Removing wallpaper isn’t complicated, but it is tedious—especially if you want to avoid damaging your walls. Four methods—steamer, water and vinegar or fabric softener, liquid remover, or gel remover—allow you to safely remove about 100 square feet of wallpaper in an hour.

Find out how to remove wallpaper with four easy, low-cost methods.

Use the method that works best for your walls:

  • Steamer: Use a steamer to remove old wallpaper, difficult wallpaper, or wallpaper on plaster walls.
  • Water and vinegar or fabric softener: Use this method to remove peelable or temporary wallpaper or when you want to make a homemade wallpaper remover instead of using harsh chemicals.
  • Liquid remover: Use liquid remover when removing vinyl wallpaper. Wallpaper in the bathroom is often vinyl-coated.
  • Gel remover: Use gel remover when you need a remover that clings to the wall and stays moist for a long time.

Prepare Walls for Wallpaper Removal

Every wallpaper removal method produces a great amount of liquid which can damage the floor. Protect floors and baseboards with sheet plastic, cardboard, or towels.

Remove everything on the walls: pictures, shelves, and mirrors. Unscrew and remove electric outlet and light switch covers.

Safety Considerations

  • Lead-based paint: Wall paint produced before 1978 may contain lead, which causes health problems in adults and children. If you suspect the paint contains lead, take precautions and wear an N95 respirator.
  • Wallpaper steamers: Never refill a wallpaper steaming tool while it is hot, as this can cause burns. Wait until the tool is completely cool before refilling it.
