Gtech vs Dyson: the differences
Having to choose a vacuum cleaner isn’t easy, but no matter whether you choose Gtech or Dyson, there’s no denying that you’re choosing a well-respected brand.
Gtech is a UK-based company, founded by Nick Grey in 2001. Nick was responsible for the invention of the world’s first cordless carpet sweeper, which paved the way for Gtech’s subsequent success.
Since then, Gtech has expanded its product offerings to include all sorts of cordless cleaning appliances (including some of the best handheld vacuums we’ve tested), garden tools, and more for day-to-day use. Working with an in-house engineering team, they pride themselves on continually pushing the boundaries of cordless technology.
Dyson, on the other hand, has been around for quite a bit longer and was founded in the 1970s by James Dyson, who was frustrated by the lacklustre performance of bagged vacuums. As such, he came up with the idea of a bagless vacuum. Five years and over 5,000 prototypes later, he invented the world’s first bagless vacuum cleaner.
Today, Dyson offers everything from cordless vacuums and the best robot vacuums to combined vacuum and mop models, and has since broken out into air treatment appliances with the launch of some of the best air purifiers on the market.
And with both models offering so many different vacuums with so many different specs and features, you can feel confident knowing that the one you choose will be from an esteemed brand with a legacy in vacuums.
Gtech vs Dyson: corded or cordless?
Both Dyson and Gtech are definitely brands for cordless vacuum lovers. While they both do offer at least one corded option for those who think corded vacuums are better, there’s no denying that they focus most of their attention on cordless models.
However, they’re still very different. For the most part, Gtech’s range of vacuum cleaners focuses on cordless upright models, which means that the dust bin is located on the floorhead rather than at the top of a stick.
This is the case with our top-rated Gtech model, the Gtech AirRAM Platinum. This vacuum scored an impressive 4.5 stars out of 5 during testing, with its 0.8L dust capacity and up to one hour run time seriously impressing us. The suction was also strong – especially on carpet – and the mess-free emptying system meant that there were no clouds of dust upon emptying.
Nevertheless, the downside of upright cordless vacuums like these is that they are typically a much more awkward shape, and the AirRAM Platinum is no different. It’s difficult to use on stairs, and it doesn’t come with tools or attachments for those smaller jobs.
On the other hand, Dyson cordless vacuums are typically a lot more manoeuvrable and user-friendly thanks to the iconic stick design. They can also transform into a handheld in seconds, and most come with tools and attachments to ensure no stair or nook goes un-vacuumed.
The downside of stick vacuums is that the bin-emptying systems can get messy – and they can also be a lot smaller than cordless uprights. In the case of the Dyson V12 – which is an excellent choice for those with hard flooring – a sacrifice you have to make is that the dust bin capacity stands at just 0.35L – over half that of the Gtech.
Because of this, this section of the Gtech vs Dyson debate should be ruled by what you value most and what you really need from a vacuum cleaner.
Gtech vs Dyson: which has better features?
Although all vacuums will clean your floors, every vacuum brand uses its own technology and features to get the job done. This is the case for both Gtech and Dyson, so it’s important to weigh up these features (and how helpful they’ll be to you) before buying your new vacuum.

- De-tangling Motorbar cleaning head: A different floorhead that can be used on both hard flooring and carpets, with anti-tangle technology for pet hair and to prevent blockages.
- CleanCompaktor bin: Available with the Dyson V16 Piston Animal, which compacts dust to make the dust bin capacity larger.
Gtech vs Dyson: what do the customer reviews say?
Gtech has over 161,000 reviews on Trustpilot, with an average rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars, ranking exceptionally high across the board for customer satisfaction. Out of those reviews, 85% are 5-star ratings, with verified customers praising the company for its service and the excellent performance of the products.
Dyson UK, on the other hand, has almost 38,000 reviews on Trustpilot, with an average rating of 2.1 out of 5 stars, ranking fairly below average as far as customer satisfaction goes. Out of the reviews, 63% are 5-stars, though, with customers speaking highly of the service.
Although in this case, it appears that Gtech has a big advantage over Dyson just from customer reviews alone, it’s important to note that Dyson’s reviews cannot be filtered to just their vacuum cleaners and also encompass their other product offerings. That said, it’s still an overwhelmingly positive response from customers, bringing Gtech up as a UK-first appliance brand to consider for home tech investments.
Gtech vs Dyson: which is more affordable?
As far as affordability goes, Gtech is undeniably the more affordable option in the Gtech vs Dyson debate. This is the case across the whole range.
The most affordable full-size Gtech vacuum we’ve tested so far is the Gtech AirFOX Platinum Cordless Stick Vacuum, which has an RRP of £299.99. However, it’s also important to note that Gtech has also ventured into the world of the best handheld vacuum cleaners. So, technically, the Gtech Prolite Bagged Handheld Vacuum Cleaner is the cheapest, coming in at £129.99.
What’s enticing about Gtech vacuum cleaners is that they don’t offer a single model costing more than £420 (apart from bundles that include a full-size vacuum and a handheld). The same can’t be said for Dyson, who is definitely on the pricier side of the market.
The cheapest Dyson vacuum cleaner we’ve tested so far is the brand’s relatively new budget-friendly model, the Dyson V8 Cyclone, which retails at £349.99. The most expensive is the Dyson V16 Piston Animal, which is significantly more expensive at £749.99.
Dyson has a wider range of vacuums than Gtech, though, and this means that Dyson’s prices do fluctuate as a result. Generally, though, you’d expect to pay around £500 for a Dyson vacuum cleaner.
Gtech vs Dyson: the verdict
As you can guess, the choice of whether to go for a Gtech or Dyson vacuum cleaner ultimately lies with you.
If you’re an average consumer looking for a powerful vacuum that gets the job done at brilliant value for money, then investing in any Gtech vacuum will likely be the most suitable option, as you’ll have many more opportunities to compare features within a similar budget. Featuring stick or upright models, you can also still tailor your purchase to your needs.
On the other hand, if super high-tech cleaning and technological advancements excite you and you want the best of the best, then shelling out for a Dyson vacuum might be the best move for you.
